First small talk 4: job and profession

posted 11 months ago

Profession or occupation is “der Beruf (-e)” in German. The adjective is “beruflich”. der Job (-s) = job

Question:

Was machst du / machen Sie beruflich?

Was bist du / sind Sie von Beruf?

Was arbeitest du/ arbeiten Sie?

All three questions mean the same: What do you do for a living? What’s your job / profession?

Reply:

Ich bin… von Beruf.

Ich arbeite als…..

Simply add your profession e.g. Ich bin Gärtner von Beruf. Ich arbeite als Gärtner. (I work as a gardener.)

Ich arbeite bei………….. is a way of telling someone what company you work for. Just add the name of your company.

Let’s say you work for Siemens. You’d say „Ich arbeite bei Siemens“.
