Have you guys heard of this rumour before, that German almost became America’s official language??? Well I hadn’t…. Until I found an article online about the “Mühlenberg-Legende”.

Wouldn’t you Americans out there all just love to be fluent in German? ;) Well, read more here!

Vocabulary:

die Legende = legend

das Märchen = fairytale

die Sage = saga

Yum!

posted 2 years ago

Germany/Austria/Switzerland has lots of really yummy types of candy. Many brands, e.g Haribo or Lindt are known worldwide. I have a sweet tooth and couldn’t really choose what I like best… but I’m more the chocolate-lover ;)

What’s your favourite candy?

Smoking age limits in #Germany

posted 2 years ago

We now know about drinking age limits here in Germany. But what about smoking? Before the laws were tightened in 2007, teenagers were permitted to smoke in public or buy tobacco and cigarettes as soon as they turned 16. The age limit is 18 now.

About 15 % of all German teenagers are smokers - compare this to e.g. California, where it’s only 8 %. (via wikipedia). Most of them smoke their first cigarette at the age of 13.

What’s your opinion / experience?

Drinking age limits in #Germany

posted 2 years ago

The minimum drinking age (MDA) and the minimum purchasing age (MPA) is less strict in Germany than in some other countries.

You’d be surprised to learn, that German teenagers are allowed to buy and consume beer and wine in public at the age of 16. For distilled beverages it’s 18.

If you are under 16 you may not be served beer or wine unless you are accompanied by parents. How is it in your country and what’s your personal opinion on those age limits?

Is it Christmas already?

posted 2 years ago

Come to #Nürnberg during the summer and depending on the area, you can experience the amazing smell of freshly baked gingerbread in the air. Mmmm.

I used to live near two of the biggest gingerbread factories for many years, and therefore could smell it almost all year long. ;)

Some of you said Aachen is the city of gingerbread and yeah, you are kind of right about that, too. Aachener Printen are certainly a famous but different type of Lebkuchen.

But personally when I think about the type of gingerbread that we read about in fairytales and see in movies (and I guess many would agree with me on that) I think about the Nürnberger Lebkuchen ;)

der Lebkuchen (“) = gingerbread (-s)

Practice German here at GermanHeit?

posted 2 years ago

Practice is a very important part of language learning. By practicing we review, internalize and therefore can better grasp the material.

So I’ve come up with some ways for you to practice German here at GermanHeit - voluntarily of course ;).

The following are three new post types I would like to offer on a regular basis:

1.) HOMEWORK - longer or more detailed exercises that you can do by either reblogging and filling in the blanks… or by completing it in the comment section of that post.

For those who choose to do the assignment in a reblog, I’m going to, in turn, reblog one or more student’s homework as an example to the class; explaining difficulties, mistakes etc. And we’ll continue our discussion in the comments section of that post so that I can answer any additional questions you may have.

2.) Come to the BLACKBOARD and answer a question - these will be single questions based on the current post’s lesson or on lessons still fresh in our minds. I’ll enable “answers” so they can be answered right away. Think of it like being called to the blackboard…only here everyone can try to answer it, and we don’t have to raise our hands ;)

3.) POP QUIZ - This is similar to BLACKBOARD in that we’ll complete it using enabled “answers” in the post itself. These will be a series of questions based on our most recent lessons.

The correct answers to pop quizzes and blackboard questions will always be posted in the comment section after a couple of hours.

Is this something that you would be interested in?

Still hungry? ;)

posted 2 years ago

Guys, it was so interesting to read all your answers to my question about German food! Thank you for that! It’s lunchtime in Germany right now and I’m thinking about having some Spätzle ;)

I’m going to post more recipes in the future btw.

And @tracy-allison: there are also gonna be some cookie recipes ;)
