The German artist I’m introducing you to today, is very special and weird at the same time. His name is Max Raabe and he is specialized in the sound of German music from the 1920s and 30s.
Max Raabe and his Palast Orchester may sound pretty odd to your ears. I think it’s fascinating and cool, but of course you need some time to get used to it :D Click on the picture to hear a song called “In der kleinen Konditorei” (At the little pastry shop) ,originally from 1928.
(brought to my attention by @johncabrera, danke!)

“Ein Hotdog unten am Hafen” (A hotdog down by the harbor) by the German band “Element of Crime”.

I like their sound a lot. They also have pretty awesome lyrics. Very poetic. :)

Peter Fox is a pretty popular German hiphop artist. He has already won three Echo awards ( = the most important German music award).

flutterknife:

Alles Neu - Peter Fox

This is fully a quarter the music I listened to this week; it’s goddamn catchy.

Also, his white dancing is not complicated nor stupid looking, possibly due to the business suit, cleaver, and cellos. Mainly the cleaver. (English Translation)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Wir sind Helden (translation: We are heroes) are a cool German pop band from Berlin. Their sound is influenced by Neue Deutsche Welle bands and has an electropoppy feel to it.

While travelling in Switzerland I saw a video for this band - Wir Sind Helden. They have a sweet and poppy sound I quite enjoy.

This is a great German song against fascism (taken from the album “Die Bestie in Menschengestalt” by “Die Ärzte”). I would even say that “Schrei nach Liebe” is one of these songs that every German knows (well, except my grandparents maybe LOL).

Because the word “Arschloch” (asshole) is used a bunch of times in the song, some radio stations didn’t play it at first. But because of the important anti-fascist topic, it was eventually played on most radio stations.

Deine Gewalt ist nur ein stummer Schrei nach Liebe
Deine Springerstiefel sehnen sich nach Zärtlichkeit
Du hast nie gelernt dich zu artikulieren
und deine Eltern hatten niemals für dich Zeit
ohohoh ARSCHLOCH

You can read the entire lyrics here.

LOL. This is a hilarious song / video. The band’s name is Stereo Total. Thanks to @johncabrera who tweeted about them recently and actually reminded me of them again! ;)

By the way - the singer, who was born in France, speaks German with a light French accent! If you listen closely you may be able to hear the difference.

Lyrics:

wir tanzen im 4-eck
wir tanzen konzentriert
ich tanz mit dir
du tanzt mit mir
ich du ich du …
ich du du …
wir tanzen konzentriert

das ist meine liebe zu dir
ich will dich abhängig machen von mir
du sollst genauso sein wie ich
du sollst mein zwilling sein
das ist meine liebe zu dir

#music

This is probably one of the shortest music video clips ever ;) “Yoko Ono” by “Die Ärzte”. Doesn’t make any sense, but it’s hilarious!

Lyrics:

Du hast mir nichts als Pech gebracht,
hast mich nur belogen.
Du hast mich lächerlich gemacht,
mein Konto überzogen.

Du nervst noch mehr als Yoko Ono.
Du gehst mir ewig auf den Sack.
Du haust nicht ab aus meiner Wohnung.
Du hast einen beschissenen Musikgeschmack.

Vocabulary:

das Pech = bad luck

jemanden belügen (regular) = (to) lie to somebody

jemanden lächerlich machen (regular) = (to) make somebody look silly

das Konto überziehen (irregular) = (to) overdraw an account

jemandem auf den Sack gehen (slang) (irregular) = (to) get on so.’s nerves

abhauen (regular) = (to) f*** off

beschissen = shitty, crappy

Dio you know the German movie “Christiane F. Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo” (famous story about young heroin addicts in Berlin during the late 70s and one of my favourite books/movies)?

Well… the soundtrack is basically just Bowie songs. Heroes is one of them. And while I was listening to it I remembered that Bowie, who lived in Berlin from 1976-1978 by the way, recorded Heroes in German, too! So cool. I thought you might be interested in listening to the German/English version - if you haven’t heard it already.

Read more about the song and what it is about here.

Read the German lyrics here.
