Grammatical terms 1: words

It would be unfair for me to assume that all of you are familiar with the grammatical terms I’m using on GermanHeit. So I figured some definitions might help those of you who are new to the language learning field :) Look them up whenever you need to! :)

Today: different kinds of words!

noun = signifies a person, place, thing, action, idea, condition or quality e.g. My DOG is cute.

verb = expresses what action, condition or relationship is going on e.g. The dog IS BARKING.

adjective = gives you more information about a noun/pronoun e.g. The dog is CUTE.

adverb = gives you more information about a verb, an adjective or another adverb The dog is running FAST.

preposition = “little” words that introduce phrases that tell about condition, time, place, manner etc. e.g. The dog is sitting ON the floor.

pronoun = takes the place of a noun in a sentence (more about the different types of pronouns in another post) e.g. IT is sitting on the floor.

article = makes a noun definite or indefinite; indicates the gender in German e.g. THE/A dog = DER/EIN Hund

conjunction = joining-words, phrases or sentence parts e.g. The dog is fat BUT cute.
