German greetings

#phrases

Ok, so when you start learning a language, one of the first things you’ll learn is how to say hello and goodbye, right? So how do we say hello in German?

Hallo! / Hi! = wow… ok, no need for translation here I guess ;)

Guten Morgen! = Good morning!

Guten Tag! = Good day!*

Guten Abend! = Good evening!

Gute Nacht! = Good night!

* “Good afternoon” doesn’t exist in German! Use “Guten Tag” instead.

* Also note that you wouldn’t say “Guten Tag” to your friends or people you know well. Say “hi” or “hallo” - otherwise they might think you’re odd ;) Whenever I use “Guten Tag”, I usually greet elderly people I don’t know well or at all. Or I wanna be extremely polite ;)
