fireflyeyelashes asked: Hi! I love your posts, they've been so helpful in learning German on my own. I am planning on going to school in Germany and am planning long-term details. In the states we have stores called Goodwill where you can buy practically everything used and really cheap. When I move to Germany I'd need the basics of any college student (plates, silverware, towels...). What's a common second-hand store that's similar and not as expensive as a department store? Thanks.

As far as I know there’s no store chain like Goodwill in Germany. However, every big city has such stores called “Gebrauchtwarenhaus” or “Gebrauchtwarenmarkt” where you can buy cheap stuff (used and mostly donated). Very often they’re run by the church or private institutions. So when you know where you’re going you should type “Gebrauchtwarenhaus or Gebrauchtwarenmarkt + name of the city” into Google. :)
