Anonymous asked: Hello! I'm a high-schooler taking German, and I have a question about grammar. How do you know which form of "zu" to use? For example, I've heard people say something like... "Ich gehe zu den Schlafzimmer", but also "Wir gehen zum den Schlafzimmer". (I'm sorry if the den-case is off, I wasn't sure if it was "den" or "dem".) It's something that's been confusing me for a while, and I just want to make sure I learn it right the first time around. ;) Thank you!
In regards to your example: You can either say “Ich gehe zu dem Schlafzimmer” or “Ich gehe zum Schlafzimmer”.
“zu” is a preposition of place (followed by the dative case) which is equivalent to the English preposition of place “to”. When a definite article follows (like in your example), you have the possibility to contract both “zu” and the article, which would either be “der” (feminine, dative) or “dem” (masculine or neuter, dative). The result is either “zur” or “zum”.
