Anonymous asked: Hello, whats up? well i hope your having a good day! im currently a student at UCLA, (studying german) and i just had a question about turks in germany. Are turks integrated well in germany? i have heard that germany's second language is turkish, is that true? how do you view turks in your country? How do you view all immigrants. I am studying german, and i currently speak turkish, french and swedish. thanks have a good day. xoxo.
That’s a very interesting question! Yeah, Turkish is also called “Germany’s second language”. You can hear it on every corner. Some even mix both languages by adding some German expressions to their Turkish - I hear that a lot when I’m e.g. on a subway.
There are currently close to 4 million people living in Germany that are either Turks or are of Turkish decent. Most of them live in cities that have big industries. There are even neighbourhoods which are almost 100% Turkish (e.g. Kreuzberg in Berlin which is also called Little Istanbul). As for the integration I think it always depends on how much the individuals themselves want to be integrated. I’ve only made good experiences so far - I work part-time at a tutoring institute and help students of all kinds of ethnicities with their homework, especially with German and English. In my opinion, the biggest problem is still the relatively poor language skills of some of the parents and especially the mothers.
I love the Turkish shops and grocery stores that are in my neighbourhood (my neighbourhood is multicultural) You cannot get better vegetables and fruits - seriously!
If you want to know more details, take a look at this wikipedia article and keep up your interest in languages :)
