Volkswagen or “VW” as it’s abbreviated (pronounced fow-veh) is one of many German car brands. Founded in 1937, it has already produced many well-known and popular types of cars e.g. the Golf, the Jetta, the Passat or not to forget - the Beetle (I’ll have to write a seperate post about that little guy ;)).
Volkswagen btw means “the people’s car”. It’s pronounced [ˈfɔlksˌvaːɡən] with a voiceless “v” (I hear English speakers pronounce it voiced like [‘vɔlksˌvaːɡən] which is incorrect).
das Volk (Völker) = people (-s)
der Wagen (Wägen) = in this case: automobile (-s)
Nowadays, Volkswagen ranks as the 3rd largest automobile manufacturer.
