Anonymous asked: Why do some Germans say the time differently.
e.g. 4:15 = Viertel nach vier AND Viertel Fünf

Took me months to finally solve this riddle and be on time for appointments. haha. What's going on? [I live in Thüringen, if that helps]

Both is correct. Which one is used depends on the part of the country!

In Northern Germany, people say “Es ist viertel nach vier” (literal: it’s quarter past four). In the South, people say “Es ist viertel fünf” (literal: it’s quarter five).

There’s a similar confusion with e.g. 4:45. In the North, people say “Es ist viertel vor 5” (literal: It’s quarter to five). However in the South, it’s “Es ist dreiviertel 5” (literal: It’s three quarters five).

I use both, but I tend to use the Southern version more often.
