Colloquial synonyms for “Bier” (beer)
“das Bier” is the normal way to say “beer” of course. But when you’re at a pub, especially in rural areas, you may hear people use different expressions for beer.
1. das kühle Blonde = literal: the cool blonde (means: a cool, bright beer)
2. der Gerstensaft = literal: barley juice
3. die Halbe = literal: the half (half a liter of beer)
4. der Bölkstoff = a term which has become popularized by a comic character called “Werner”. It basically means something like “booze” but only refers to beer. I never use it.
5. das Helle / das Dunkle = a bright / dark beer
6. das Seidel / Seidla = used in Southern Germany (Bavaria). It used to be an old word for half a liter.
