Basically antworten and beantworten both mean (to) reply / (to) answer / (to) respond. But here’s the difference:
a) antworten AUF etwas.
Ich antworte auf deinen Brief. I reply to your letter.
Bitte antworten Sie auf meine Frage! Please answer my question!
But you can also use antworten without having to say what you respond to. Example:
Ich werde dir bald antworten. I’m going to reply to you soon.
“Das ist toll”, antwortete Thomas. “That’s great”, Thomas answered.
b) beantworten doesn’t need any preposition.
Ich beantworte deinen Brief. I reply to your letter.
Bitte beantworten Sie meine Frage! Please answer my question!
