Well, he’s supposed to be a great author and poet, that’s true. During his career he won lots of important literature prizes, e.g. the Georg Büchner Preis. Hans Magnus Enzensberger was also politically active. I haven’t read anything written by him yet (or at least I can’t remember), so unfortunately I cannot make recommendations.
