I’d say that “die Sehnsucht” (= longing; yearning) is mostly used in literature (very popular in Romanticism) and isn’t very common in everyday speech . Here’s an example.
“Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt, weiß wie ich leide.” (Goethe)
“Sehnsucht” is used with the preposition “nach”. e.g. Die Sehnsucht nach Liebe.
