Anonymous asked: Hello, I'm currently learning German and just started a week ago. We were introduced to articles (der, das, die, ein, eine) but I have difficulty writing sentences because I don't understand when to use them properly aside from noun genders. So just asking when is the right time to use der/das/die versus ein/eine?
(I also apologise if question is not clear. English is not my first language.)
Hey there!
I don’t know what your native tongue is, but the German definite (der, die, das) and indefinite (ein, eine, ein) articles are used the same as in e.g. English. The definite article is used for nouns that are known individually or generally so e.g. things that the speaker has already mentioned or that are uniquely specified.
e.g. DER Film ist lustig. THE movie is funny (the in the sense of “this”).
The indefinite article is used for nouns that aren’t known or specified (yet) or in a general hypothetical statement.
e.g. Ich hätte gern EIN Stück Pizza. I would like to have A slice of pizza.
I hope I could help you :)
