The du-imperative in German
So how does it work?
Well, you have to take the stem of the verb (cursive in examples) and add an -e.
Examples:
arbeit/en (to work) -> Arbeite schneller! Work faster!
antwort/en (to answer) -> Antworte jetzt! Answer now!
There are verbs that have a vowel change in the stem from e to i in the 2nd person singular du. The imperative keeps this vowel change and just doesn’t add the -e.
Examples:
geb/en (to give) -> du gibst (you give) -> Gib mir den Brief! Give me the letter!
ess/en (to eat) -> du isst (you eat) -> Iss mehr Gemüse! Eat more vegetables!
Read general information about the imperative here.
